Dr. James E. Kaplar is a clinical psychologist serving the Northeast Ohio region.  He has special interest in ADD / ADHD, Asperger’s Disorder, dyslexia and other learning disabilities, High-Functioning Autism (HFA), Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD), and related behavioral and emotional disorders.  These disorders can negatively affect academic performance, work performance, relationships, and self-esteem.  With over 30 years experience in the field of psychology, he offers consultation, assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention and treatment for children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples.

Dr. Kaplar received his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University.  Funded through a National Institute of Mental Health Traineeship (full fellowship) in Clinical Psychology, he received his master’s and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  He served his internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland, via a National Institute of Health Pre-Doctoral Fellowship.

Dr. Kaplar brings a wealth of experience as a clinician, educator, and administrator.  Besides private practice, he has worked in public mental health facilities, hospital-based outpatient and inpatient venues, and Special Education settings.  He has also consulted to various law enforcement agencies and has written a number of informative articles for the general public.  In addition, he has given presentations on humor as an educational and therapeutic tool in Asperger’s Disorder at national and regional conferences. 

His professional resume includes Clinical Director and Chief Clinical Officer of the Summit Academy Community Schools for Alternative Learners, Director of Psychology at Youngstown Woodside Hospital, Founder and Director of The ADD Center, original Director of the Consultation and Education Department at Marymount Hospital Mental Health Center, and Psychology Instructor at Cuyahoga Community College. 

Combining clinical practice, extensive experience in community mental health, and application of research on brain activities and the learning process, Dr. Kaplar helped develop the concept of “therapeutic education” and the Therapeutic School Educational Model.  He designs innovative service delivery modalities, including remedial education and application of the therapeutic school education model, for individuals with ADHD, Asperger Syndrome, learning disability, or behavioral/emotional dysfunction.
